Last week I got the opportunity to enjoy the soul singing of Nathaniel Willemse in his classic soul tribute to Marvin Gaye, which was an inspiring experience.

For those who don’t know him, originally from South Africa Nathaniel first shot to fame on X Factor Australia and made waves with his hit song “You”.

What was most impressive about hearing him perform up-close and live (in the small and intimate Chapel off Chapel venue in Prahran) was his four-octave range, ranging from vibrant bass to striking falsetto at the upper range.

Accompanying him was a vibrant piano and keyboard player and single backup singer, a small ensemble for such a larger than life event.

I also appreciated how broad his own modern vibe and attitude to those timeless classic soul songs of Marvin Gaye, even inviting some of the audience up on stage (the event ended with many dancing up on stage with him).

The event overall was great fun and also a timely reminder about the value of reaching for the stars and seeing where talent and determined practice can take you…
